So, for the perfect combination of well-known locations and hidden gems, these are some of the best places to take pictures in San Francisco!
The Sutro Baths are located at the top of the city near Golden Gate Bridge. Built in 1894, the Sutro Baths was a large, privately owned public saltwater swimming pool facility in the Lands End region of San Francisco. Unfortunately, the baths burned down in 1966, and these days, the ruins of the Sutro Baths are a beautiful and very peaceful spot – ideal for photographs showcasing a former time.
Golden Gate Bridge
Of course, you can’t make a list of Instagrammable spots in San Francisco and not mention the Golden Gate Bridge! The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most popular spots in San Francisco for taking pictures.
The red bridge spans the Golden Gate, a strait between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, and is a famous spot in the USA and around the world. It is a great spot to visit for both day and night shots, plus its location on the west side of the city makes it an ideal destination to visit during sunset or sunrise.
San Fran’s Chinatown is the oldest in North America and is a vibrant, colorful neighborhood to wander around. With its winding streets, traditional Chinese architecture, and interesting shops, it’s no wonder that this district makes for great Instagram pictures! Plus, it’s also a fantastic spot to stop for a bit to eat in between your photography adventures!
The Painted Ladies are a row of Victorian houses located in the Alamo Square neighborhood of San Francisco. These homes were built in the late 1800s and are an example of Italianate, Greek Revival, and Eastlake Architecture. These homes appear on many postcards because they’re so beautiful – their bright colors make them stand out against always-gray San Fran skies! Plus, you can get great Instagram pictures with some iconic cityscapes like Alamo Square Park or the downtown skyline!
San Francisco City Hall
Another great building to take pictures in San Francisco is the city hall. It’s a beautiful white marble building with amazing architecture and interesting features, like an open rotunda, making some really cool shots! The beach is located on the west side of the city, and it’s one of the few places where you can get an unobstructed view of the bridge. Plus, with its location right at the edge of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, you can get some really cool pictures of the bridge and the park!
If you’re looking for a really unique spot to take pictures in San Francisco, then Lombard Street is definitely the place to go! This street is known as the “most crooked street in the world” because of its steep and winding hills. It’s definitely a sight to see – and to photograph! But it’s also a pretty popular location to visit, so make sure to get there early in the morning or late at night if you want some of those iconic shots!

Union Square is a great place to visit in San Francisco if you’re looking for some of the city’s best shopping and dining! This is one of its most popular tourist attractions, though, so it can be pretty crowded. But don’t let that discourage you from taking pictures here – Union Square has beautiful architecture with ornate facades on many of the buildings, and it’s always lit up at night, making for some really cool shots!

The Japanese Tea Garden is a beautiful garden located in Golden Gate Park. It’s definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for some peace and tranquility in the city or if you want some amazing pictures! The gardens are full of lush greenery, ponds, and bridges, making it the perfect place to relax and take some photos.
Coit Tower is another really famous landmark in San Francisco! This tower was built as a monument to firefighters, so it has some great murals inside depicting scenes from the city’s history. It also offers amazing panoramic views of the entire city – including Alcatraz Island and Golden Gate Bridge. So, make sure you stop by Coit Tower if you want to get some great pictures of San Francisco!
Twin Peaks is a really cool park in San Francisco that offers some amazing views of the city down below! The beautiful flora and fauna make for great Instagram pictures, plus you can even hike up to the top of each hill (if you’re feeling adventurous).
The Bay Bridge is another really famous landmark in San Francisco! This bridge goes right across the bay, so you can get some amazing views of Alcatraz and Treasure Island from here. The best time to visit this spot though is at night when all the lights are on – it makes for one beautiful Instagram picture if I do say so myself!

The Palace of Fine Arts is a beautiful building located in the Marina District of San Francisco. It was originally built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and it’s since been turned into a museum. What Should You Pack for San Francisco Photography?
So, now that you know some of the best Instagram spots in San Francisco, it’s time to pack! The main things I’d recommend bringing are a camera (of course!), as well as an extra battery and memory card for your camera. You should also bring a tripod – trust me, this will come in handy when you’re taking pictures at Land’s End or Twin Peaks. If you’re looking to do some hiking, I’d also recommend bringing a good pair of shoes and some sunscreen.
Here are a few more of the most important things to pack for a San Francisco photography trip:
San Fran is chilly. There’s no denying it. Even in the summer months, it can get a little bit cold, so it’s important to bring a windproof jacket. The best ones to bring are down jackets because they’re both windproof and warm.
It’s super important to stay hydrated when you’re on vacation – especially in the summer months! That means bringing a water bottle with you is essential for your San Francisco photography trip (no one wants dehydration). I’d recommend a stainless steel water bottle because it doesn’t leak, and you can drink out of it with one hand.
You’re going to be doing a lot of walking, so make sure you bring comfortable shoes with you! I’d recommend bringing either comfortable sneakers or hiking boots (depending on what kind of photography activities you want to do).
Don’t forget to bring a secure backpack with you so that you can store all of your photography gear when you’re out and about! If you want a perfect one, go for one that’s water-resistant, so if it rains on your trip, everything inside will be safe. You’ll also want one with plenty of pockets and room for storage.
A scarf is a must-have item for San Fran. Not only does it keep you warm, but it also doubles as a dust mask if the air quality is bad (which it often is). I’d recommend bringing either a silk or cotton scarf – something that won’t get too heavy when wet.
If you’re bringing a DSLR camera with you on your San Francisco photography trip, then don’t forget to bring some lenses! I’d recommend bringing a wide-angle lens, as well as a zoom lens for those farther away shots.
San Francisco Photography Tips
Now that you know what to pack for your San Francisco photography trip, here are a few tips to help make the most of your trip:
- Plan your route in advance – this will help ensure that you see all the best spots in San Fran.
- Make sure you have plenty of storage space on your memory card – you don’t want to run out of space in the middle of your trip!
- Try practicing some long exposure shots with moving objects (like cars or people) before your trip starts so that they turn out perfectly when you do it on location. This is especially important if there are lots of tourists around because most people won’t notice if their face gets blurred in photos like these – plus, crowds make great subjects too!
- Get creative and experiment with your photography – use different lenses, take pictures from new angles and with interesting lighting.
- Use a polarizing filter to cut out reflections on glass buildings or water.
- Don’t forget about sunrise and sunset photos for that perfect golden hour light – this is the only time of day when you can get those stunning shadows in your photographs without it being too dark.
